Teach Yourself Everything

Who says you have to go to school to actually learn something?

Phonics: igh, eigh, aigh, ti, ci, si, ough, augh,

Today we have the final posting in the phonic’s series. Do not let the scary looking combinations scare you, these are actually not that bad.

IGH has one sound

  • “i” as in: right, high, delight (typically the “gh” is silent)

EIGH has two sounds

  • “a” as in: eight, neighbor, sleigh (basically combine the “ei” syllable and the silent “gh”)
  • Long “i” as in: height, sleight (only these two)

AIGH has one sound

  • “a” as in: straight (this is a very uncommon spelling)

GENERAL RULE (for the next few combinations): Only first syllables in words can begin with the letter combination “sh” (sh can be inside other syllables, just not start them)

TI has two sounds

  • “sh” as in: nation, patience, partial (it is used instead of “sh” to begin the last syllable of a word)
  • “zh” as in: equation (only this word)

CI has one sound

  • “sh” as in: special, glacier, precious (also used instead of “sh” to begin the last syllable of a word)

SI has two sounds

  • “sh” as in: confession, mansion, profession (see above)
  • “zh” as in: television, confusion, division (see above)

OUGH has six sounds (sorry, no spelling rules here… I’ll try to find something)

  • “o” as in: though, doughnut
  • “oo” as in: through
  • “uf” as in: tough, enough
  • “awf” as in: cough
  • “aw” as in: bought, thought
  • “ow” as in: bough

AUGH has two sounds

  • “aw” as in: daughter, caught, taught, naughty (this is actually a combination of the syllable “au” and the silent “gh”)
  • “af” as in: laugh

Woot! We are now done with the phonics!

Update: 15 July, 2014. All spelling rules now added for the entire series!!! (Except “ough” … I have yet to find any spelling rules for that syllable).

Novel Goal(s)

Currently I am writing my own novel for the fun of it. However, some days I need a bit of extra push, so I will post my running word tally. Once I get to 50k words, I will post the first chapter as a teaser for the story.

Total Words: 25,826
